Saudi Umrah & Tourist Visas 2023

eVisa & Umrah Visa Information

In May 2023, citizens of the United Kingdom who wish to travel to Saudi Arabia generally require a visa to enter the country. However, the specific visa requirements may vary depending on the purpose and duration of your stay. The Saudi Arabian government has introduced an electronic visa system called the "eVisa" for certain nationalities, including citizens of the United Kingdom. The eVisa allows eligible travelers to apply for and obtain their Saudi Arabia visa online, without needing to visit a Saudi embassy or consulate. To apply for the eVisa, you can visit the official Saudi Arabian government website or utilize an authorized visa service provider. The application process typically involves submitting an online application form, providing necessary documentation, and paying the required fees.

An Umrah visa is a specific visa type issued by the Saudi Arabian government for individuals who wish to perform the pilgrimage known as Umrah. Umrah is a voluntary pilgrimage to the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah in Saudi Arabia undertaken by Muslims at any time of the year, unlike the Hajj pilgrimage which has specific dates. The Umrah visa allows individuals to enter Saudi Arabia and perform the rituals associated with the Umrah pilgrimage. It is a separate visa from other types of visas and is specifically for those intending to undertake Umrah. To obtain an Umrah visa, there are certain requirements that need to be fulfilled, such as having a valid passport, providing proof of being a Muslim, and in some cases, having a sponsor in Saudi Arabia. It's important to note that the Umrah visa is subject to regulations set by the Saudi government, and the application process can vary.

Why the discrepancy in Umrah Visa prices?

In order to generate such visas, they must be done using an OTA (Online Travel Agency) or Umrah booking engine.  This caused further issues, as there was only a handful of agencies at the time whose system was able to generate the e-Umrah Visas.  To add further complexity not all hotels were listed.  Therefore, pilgrims who had booked a DIY Umrah package” i.e their own flights/accommodation/transportation and were looking for Umrah visa only, subsequently were being offered the Visas between £150-£250 (This costs depended on whether Pilgrims wanted to keep their existing Hotel bookings or not.  It is why we have always advocated that people book via Licensed Hajj & Umrah agents so as to avoid paying more when new Hajj/Umrah rules are implemented back in Saudi Arabia!).   Those who had booked via Umrah agents found that the cost of their Umrah package had gone up and they were either offered a refund or had given the option to pay the additional costs.
